Santa Fe

The USA's oldest capital city, Santa Fe, sits at nearly 7,000 feet and is one of the country's top art destinations. Canyon Road, just west of the town center, is the gallery district and most of its graceful adobe buildings are filled with wonderful artistic creations - although a few places are a bit too tacky for some tastes. Outside sculptures of bears and giant toes provide eye candy for the numerous tourists doing the mandatory art stroll. Aside from art, Santa Fe is recognized for its unique architecture. City law mandates all homes must be built from adobe, and as a result this golden-hued city resembles a charming spaghetti Western movie set. The town square, surrounded by shops, more galleries and restaurants serving delicious New Mexican cuisine and divine margaritas, is perfect for getting a feel for the slower pace of life. Come at Christmas time and the whole place is lit up with light from thousands of illuminera (candle lanterns) lining rooftops and sidewalks.
