Croton-on-Hudson is home to the United States Military Academy at West Point; President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s birthplace is located in Hyde Park. Of no lesser historical importance, the name Rockefeller has been synonymous with the Hudson Valley since the late 19th century. The family's estate, Kykuit, built in 1906, contains a world famous art collection. Two excellent examples of 19th century architecture are Lyndhurst and Sunnyside, home to American writer Washington Irving. Gomez Mill House is the earliest surviving Jewish residence in North America. Union Church at Pocantico Hills was built in 1920. Don’t let the plain unpretentious stone façade fool you; step inside to view some fabulous art. The rose window over the chancel, dedicated to the matriarch of the Rockefeller family, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, was designed by Henri Matisse. The eight stained glass windows depicting the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Crucifixion were designed by Marc Chagall.
