Overview
Thirty-mile-long Lake George is dotted by tiny islands, their evergreen boughs laden with snow in the winter months, when the temps can drop sufficiently to turn the waterway into a snowmobiler's fantasy. The lake points north to the remainder of the snow-capped, majestic Adirondack Mountains. The region, once a site of conflict between the French, British, American Patriots and several Indian Nations, formed the inspiration for the James Fenimore Cooper classic The Last of the Mohicans (though the famous film was shot in North Carolina). This summertime outdoor lover's paradise trades in the water-skis for cross-country skis, and 150 miles of trails wandered by families in the warmer months are groomed for snowmobiles. Lake George is also popular for its dude ranches and rodeos, and the horsing community offers all season riding. The area acts as a gateway to the High Peaks region, 60 miles to the north, and has a few year-round resorts such as the Sagamore and the family-friendly Six Flags Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Waterpark catering to West Mountain skiers and those looking to escape the crowds.
