Overview

Montauk sits on the far eastern tip of Long Island's South Fork, an isolated fishing village that comes alive during the summer tourist season. The South Fork is New York City's playground, often referred to as The Hamptons; an eclectic mix of weathered cottage rentals, charming villages with manicured garden neighborhoods, seafood shacks, hot clubs and beach scenes. The South Fork is New York City's playground, often referred to as The Hamptons; an eclectic mix of weathered cottage rentals, charming villages with manicured garden neighborhoods, seafood shacks, hot clubs and beach scenes. Although all South Fork beaches are open to the public, parking can be a major problem (though some hotels offer day passes). Fortunately, one of the best — Montauk’s Hither Hills State Park – offers daily fees. Near Montauk, the terrain becomes windswept, barren, and wild. Despite all the tourists who come here in summer and the recent sprinkling of hip hotspots, Montauk basically remains surrounded by dunes and sandy beach and offers a laid-back home for the commercial deep-sea fishing that is big business here.

Known as one of the country’s top surf towns, the sea is the highlight, though Lake Montauk also offers watercraft fun and sailors can pick between bay or ocean for their outings. Fishermen head below the Montauk Lighthouse to cast from the point, while riders head a few miles inland to enjoy trails on 4,000 acres of hills and beach at the nation’s oldest horse ranch. Even if you just want to hit a local taco truck for a snack while lounging on the beach, Montauk provides.
