Nestled in a valley of the Adirondack Mountains is the village of Saranac Lake. Surrounded by lakes and rivers, it is a great escape not just for outdoor activities, but also for yoga, tai chi, Reiki and healing touch treatments at the many spas and wellness centers. Get outdoors canoeing and kayaking on the Saranac Lake chain, hiking the trails overlooking the Ausable River in High Falls Gorge, or climbing 5,000 foot Mt. Marcy and Mt. Algonquin. Rock or ice climbers will love the mountains of the Cascade Lakes and Wilmington Notch regions. The waterways around the area offer good trout and bass fishing. Lake Placid with its world renowned skiing is fifteen minutes away. For less strenuous activities there’s geocaching (searching for treasures hidden by others with a GPS device), enjoying views of the mountains on the Adirondack Scenic Railway, or stepping back in time to 1887 with a visit to the cottage where Robert Louis Stevenson and his family lived. Walk the nature trails and view live animals at the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks. The Adirondack Museum has numerous exhibits and buildings detailing the area’s history.
