VirtualTourist.com: tips and reviews from real travelers who have visited Saratoga
Saratoga
The Saratoga Race Course is the oldest in the USA, built in 1864, and for six weeks each summer, it is the center of the horse universe. The Victorian grandstand holds 25,000, including some descended from the Gilded Age millionaires who made this an earlier Las Vegas, with casinos and elegant resorts. The mineral waters still bubble at the Roosevelt and Lincoln bathhouses, and the old bottling plant is now a vintage car museum. Culture thrives, as Saratoga is the summer home of the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and so does nightlife, thanks to the proximity of Skidmore College. Enjoy the proud Revolutionary War history at a re-enactment of the pivotal Battle of Saratoga, in which King George's troops suffered their first major defeat.
