There are golf courses, museums, historic houses, art galleries, and casinos, not to mention the shopping, fine dining, and spas. Ethnic festivals take place throughout the year in the city’s neighborhoods. See a play or concert at the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Center at Syracuse University or at the newly restored Art Deco Palace Theater. Children ten and under are sure to enjoy comic performers at the Magic Circle Children’s Theater. The Camillus Erie Canal Park Museum is a reproduction of what an 1860s canal side store looked like. The park, with 400 acres, has nine miles of trails and a restored section of the canal. Learn about Syracuse’s abolitionist history and Underground Railroad at the Barnes Home; visit the historic homes of suffragists Harriet May Mills and Matilda Joslyn Gage who were instrumental in getting the right to vote for women. From the mid 18th to the early 20th centuries Syracuse was the largest supplier of salt to the United States; the Salt Museum has exhibits of boiling blocks, kettles and wooden barrels used for salt processing.
