Today all the factories are gone and the city is undergoing a massive revitalization program, particularly for the arts. The Emerson Gallery at Hamilton College is known for its exhibits of pre-Columbian art. The Kirkland Arts Center is a multi-arts center that hosts classes, exhibitions, concerts and lectures. The Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute campus encompasses an art museum with changing exhibits of art and architecture, a performing arts theater that holds concerts and films and a renowned school of art. The Griffis International Sculpture Garden grounds are filled with contemporary wood, glass and steel sculptures. A visit to the Erie Canal Village is like taking a step back in time to the nineteenth century. The village, constructed on the site where the Erie Canal began, has three museums: the Erie Canal Museum, which tells the story of the canal in exhibits; the Harden Museum, with a collection of horse drawn vehicles; and the New York State Museum of Cheese, housed in a restored nineteenth-century cheese factory.
