The city is an amalgamation of two cities - Winston and Salem - but it's also dubbed "Camel City" as a nod to the city's obvious tobacco industry history. A pretty town, Winston-Salem revolves around the illustrious Wake Forest University, whose campus gardens and anthropology museum are well worth visiting. For a mid-size city, it has an impressive commitment to the arts and several museums and performance venues complement the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. On the grounds of tobacco baron R.J. Reynolds, estate, the buildings have been converted into shops, restaurants and galleries to form Reynalda Village. Finally, anyone who appreciates the finer things in life rejoice! - the Krispy Kreme doughnut was born in Winston-Salem in 1937 and the gooey hunks of delicious dough are still made fresh everyday.
