Overview

When winter storms roll in from the Pacific Ocean, lots of snow is dumped on Mt. Hood — a typical winter snowpack is about 100 inches, and it's not uncommon to ski on 10 feet of snow. Mt. Hood skiers and boarders are a hardy bunch; they live for crystalline sunny days following a storm, but are accustomed to navigating the mountain in blustery, near-whiteout conditions. Although locals tend to go to Mt. Hood Meadows, a large resort with good lift service and, oftentimes, the best weather on the mountain, if this is your first or only trip to Hood, it's worth paying a visit to Timberline, where the WPA-built Timberline Lodge is a classic rustic Northwest architectural gem. Though this is the best place to stay on the mountain, there are also rooms in the tiny town of Government Camp. Hood River, right down the hill from Mt. Hood Meadows, is another good option. This pretty and sophisticated Columbia Gorge town stays mostly snow-free during the winter and has a wide range of lodging and good restaurants.
