Lancaster to many is Dutch Country, a good-sized town surrounded by satellite villages, activities, and amusements celebrating the lifestyle. “Dutch” is a misnomer — it’s a misspelling of Deutsch, the Germanic language of the first settlers. Lancaster to many is Dutch Country, a good-sized town surrounded by satellite villages, activities, and amusements celebrating the lifestyle. “Dutch” is a misnomer — it’s a misspelling of Deutsch, the Germanic language of the first settlers. This is the epicenter of Amish country in Pennsylvania. Nearly 5,000 small farms cover the area; the average farm size is 85 acres, and many of the fields continue to be tilled with horses and mules as they have been since colonial times. Oddly, this reclusive religion has become a business, due in part to the romantic idea most of us have of the “unworldly” practice of Old Order Amish. The appeal of simplicity and community among the Amish and other religious groups that were drawn to this area is undeniable, and Lancaster and environs gives visitors an opportunity to explore and appreciate the more graceful parts of those who are “in the world, but not of it.” In addition, the area is home to several sites of historical interest such as the unique Ephrata Cloister, and numerous other attractions including excellent railroad museums (both full-size and miniature) and a farm/amusement park. There’s something for everyone, and plenty of reasons to visit and stay awhile.
