A long-time destination for New Yorkers and Philadelphians seeking the simple life, the natural beauty of the gently rolling Pocono mountains belies an unusual foundation: Eastern Pennsylvania lies atop one of the world?s rarest phenomena, massive fields of anthracite coal. "Black diamond" mines - so named because of the obsidian-like character of the coal - reach deep into the earth throughout the region, though most visitors see only the sparkling Delaware River and the flame-covered trees of autumn. This is a year-round destination for outdoor recreation, including winter skiing, summer hiking, fall leaf-peeping and spring kayaking. This is also the perfect place for romance - a fact well-noted by the number of all-inclusive resorts, many set up exclusively for honeymooners. This is the home of two-story-tall champagne glass hot-tubs, heart-shaped swimming pools and twinkling lights above a satin-covered round bed. Scranton and Wilkes-Barre are the urban center of the Poconos, but the entire area from White Mills to Jim Thorpe is dotted with villages, local museums and unique sites such as the state's oldest brewery, in Pottsville.
