The 1875 railway station in West Kingston is pure New England nostalgia, with its original potbellied stove, wooden benches and ticket booth restored. The grounds are restored to period gardens. Also now used as exhibit space, Helme House was built as a bank in 1802. The South County Art Association shows its members' work there. The Pettaquamscutt Historical Society, in the 1858 stone county jail building, has exhibits on the Rhode Island involvement in the Civil War. Next door is the Federal-style Congregational church built in 1820, and the library dates from 1775.

On the Kingston campus of the University of Rhode Island is an arboretum of more than 110 species of trees and shrubs and a series of gardens open to the public. These include formal beds of annuals and perennials, a water garden and greenhouses filled with tropical plants. In nearby Peace Dale, a sculpture by Daniel Chester French decorates the library lawn, and opposite it is the Museum of Art and Primitive Culture, with excellent collections of local Native American artifacts.
