Just 50 miles north of Charleston, the park has a remote feel – you won’t see throngs of tourists; you’ll see South Carolinian families having picnics, beachcombing or surf fishing. The park has ocean-side campsites, a few cabins and a series of walking trails – one of which leads to a mysterious 4,000-year-old shell mound. The park is the gateway to the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve, a collection of barrier islands, maritime forests, estuaries and tidal marshland. The preserve protects 350,000-acres of threatened coastal flora and fauna and is only accessible by boat. Tours are available from Edisto. Given the marshy, humid climate in this area, mosquitoes and ticks flourish here, so be sure to bring repellent and wear long sleeves and pants, especially during spring and summer.
