When the snow flies and the rumbling roar of motorcycles winds down, Sturgis becomes a popular winter destination for outdoor sports. Snowmobiling on more than 300 miles of groomed trails in the Black Hills National Forest is popular with locals and visitors, as are cross-country and downhill skiing. Terry Peak and Mystic Miner are the Black Hills’ two ski resorts and both are located about a half hour from Sturgis. Mystic Miner Ski Resort at Deer Mountain is located in a natural snow belt and averages 150 inches of snowfall annually. Novice skiers love the beginner’s area while intermediate and advanced skiers find challenges with more than 850 feet of vertical drop at Mystic Miner. A 3,000-foot triple chair and two Pomas move a large capacity of skiers per hour. Terry Peak Ski Area offers 25 trails, 600 acres of skiable terrain, two high-speed quad detachable chairlifts, a double and triple chairlift and a high-tech snowmaking system that assures good snow conditions from start to end of the season. Founded in August 1876, Sturgis was named for a commander at nearby Fort Meade Cavalry Post, Samuel D. Sturgis, whose son, Lt. J.G. Sturgis, was killed with General George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn.
