The academic, political, and cultural capital of Texas, Austin is the consummate college town crossed with the consummate music town, with a splash of high-tech thrown into the funky mix for good measure. Besides being the seat of the state's politics (the capitol building is actually seven feet taller than the U.S. Capitol - everything is indeed bigger in Texas!), Austin is home to the University of Texas, so the locals bleed orange here, and football is king. The music scene is legendary, with local heroes like Willie Nelson and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, and a big annual event in South by Southwest (otherwise known as SXSW, held in mid-March). The culture down here is laid-back and fun-loving, but the populace is also notably active and passionate about social and environmental causes. Fun and funky neighborhoods abound, with an eclectic mix of commerce to be found along South Congress Avenue. And if you're looking for good barbecue or Tex-Mex, you won't have to search for long: Great hole-in-the-wall eateries and beer joints abound.
