Moab is a great base for exploring two nearby national parks: Arches and Canyonlands. Arches, which is the setting for Edward Abbey's classic book, Desert Solitaire, is just a few miles north of town and has loads of great day hikes to dramatic rock arches and other sandstone formations. Canyonlands is a huge park, divided into four districts. Of these, the mesa-top Island in the Sky district is closest to Moab, and features birds-eye views of the Colorado and Green rivers converging 1300 feet below. The Shafer Trail Road drops down from the mesa top to river level, where it meets the 100-mile-long White Rim Road, which runs along the base of the cliffs of the Island in the Sky. Canyonlands' Needles district is south of Moab and makes for a long day trip from town. The hiking here is fantastic, and, just outside the park, Newspaper Rock is a huge wall full of Native American petroglyphs. The town of Moab itself is a vibrant mix of Mormon and non-Mormon, and has some top-notch accommodations and several fine restaurants, although during the spring, it's a big destination for 4-wheelers and can become infused with a little too much testosterone.
