Salt Lake City's diversity and relatively progressive politics may come as a surprise to those who know it only as the epicenter of Mormon culture. Although roughly half of the city's population belongs to the Church of Latter Day Saints, there is much more to do in this thriving city than visit Temple Square...although the downtown square is a good place to start a visit. The tall white temple itself is open only to LDS members in good standing; others (aka "gentiles") are welcomed by a fleet of young guides from all over the world to tour the tabernacle and other Temple Square buildings, including the fascinating Family History Library, a hotspot for genealogists of any (or no) faith. To the east of town, canyons lead up into the Wasatch Range where there's world-class skiing accessible by city bus and good summertime hiking. A good place to explore the Great Salt Lake is Antelope Island, a large state park north and west of town. As outdoorsy young people have moved to SLC in recent years, the city's restaurants and nightlife have become surprisingly good.
