Summer tourists choose these mountains best known for skiing for their hiking and nature, as well as for the quiet villages at their feet. The Mad River Valley is lovely to visit any time of year, with craftsmen’s studios, art galleries and antique shops to visit and country lanes to drive. The valley is a good base for hikes on Vermont’s Long Trail, and for climbing Camel's Hump or Mount Mansfield. Shorter hikes lead to waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. Little River, Camels Hump and Waterbury Center State Parks offer camping, swimming, canoeing and nature programs, as well as hiking trails of their own. Canoe and kayak waters are found throughout the region, as well as horseback adventures, golf, bicycling and plenty of other outdoor adventures.

The region also offers a surprising array of fine dining. The arts are alive and well here, with an annual opera festival held in the historic Joslyn Round Barn Cultural Center in Waitsfield. The base lodge at Sugarbush turns from skiing to other forms of recreation in the summer, with a sports center and a live music series. The facilities and activities that keep summer visitors fit include indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, cardio and weight equipment, squash, racquetball and indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a rock-climbing gym, ping-pong, half-court basketball, plus fitness, yoga and tennis classes.
