Middlebury College keeps the town feeling young and keeps its cultural scene larger than one would expect in a small town. Poet Robert Frost's cabin at nearby Bread Loaf can be visited by a walking trail, and the mountains are webbed with hiking trails. The annual summer Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the oldest in America, is a literary institution that has for the past 86 years attracted talented writers to its workshops, lectures and classes. Rolling landscapes rise to small mountains, with Middlebury Gap cutting a scenic road through them that challenges cyclists. An excellent historical museum, a Morgan horse farm, a brewery and miles of scenic back roads keep visitors busy. Not far from Middlebury is Lake Dunmore, with a state park and a waterfall. Above the lake rises the Moosalamo Recreation Area, miles of wilderness with hiking trails.
