Middlebury, Vermont - Travel Guide
The attractive college town of Middlebury is well named, lying between the Green Mountains and the lower reaches of Lake Champlain, in one of Vermont's loveliest regions. Middlebury College keeps the town feeling young and imbues it with a cultural scene far beyond its size. The college's own ski area, Middlebury Snow Bowl, is one of the sweetest in the state, a low-key place where you can be comfortable without the latest fashion skiwear that's de rigeur at Killington. Poet Robert Frost's cabin at nearby Breadloaf can be visited by a walking trail, and the mountains are webbed with hiking and cross-country ski trails. An excellent historical museum, one of Vermont's best craft centers, a Morgan horse farm, a brewery and miles of scenic back roads keep visitors busy. Not far from Middlebury is Lake Dunmore, with a state park and a nearby waterfall. Above its shore rises the Moosalamo Recreation Area, miles of wilderness with hiking trails. To the north is Vergennes, a significant site in the Revolution, and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, which explores the strategic importance of the lake in that war.
