In town, the Stowe Recreational Path leads from the village center toward the mountain and is used by walkers, cyclists and in-line skaters during the summer. The streets of Stowe are lined with small boutique shops and peppered with art galleries. A drive up the road past the ski resort leads over the rocky summit of Smugglers Notch. At the top, the road winds among giant boulders before dropping into the valley of the Lamoille River, passing Smugglers Notch Resort, a ski and summer retreat that has been named the top family vacation resort in America. Year-round recreation includes hiking, swimming, tennis, paddle sports, horseback riding and a variety of other sports and learning experiences for all ages. Three dramatic waterfalls – Bingham, Moss Glen, and Sterling – are reached by short, level hikes.
