Once the ski capital of New England with America?s first chairlift, Stowe still provides one of the best overall ski experiences in the state. But skiing isn?t all this winter haven offers. The Stowe Recreational Path leads from the village center toward the mountain, used by walkers, cyclists, in-line skaters, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Until snow closes it for the winter, the road past the ski area leads over the rocky summit of Smugglers Notch. At the top the road winds among giant boulders before dropping into the valley of the Lamoille River. It passes Smugglers Notch Resort, a ski and summer retreat that has been named the top family vacation resort in America. Year-round recreation includes state-of-the-art grooming on ski trails, cross-country skiing, winter and summer hiking, ice skating, swimming, tennis and a variety of sports and learning experiences for all ages. Three dramatic waterfalls ? Bingham, Moss Glen and Sterling ? are reached by short, level hikes.
