Also in this neighborhood of distinguished Victorian architecture, the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and Art Gallery houses Albert Bierstadt's monumental painting, "The Domes of Yosemite." But the Northeast Kingdom is best known for its outdoor activities in the vast stretches of wilderness and on its many lakes and ponds. Three excellent parks — Brighton State Park, Maidstone State Park and Groton State Forest — offer campsites, nature trails, hiking, beaches and water sports. Wildlife is abundant, and moose are frequently seen along the roadsides (and in the road, so be careful), especially in low boggy areas. Jay Peak Aerial Tramway offers scenic rides from late June through Labor Day and during foliage season. The town of Derby Line is interesting, sitting astride the international border, which runs right through the reading room of its library.
