The Marines landed here in 1816. Marine Corps Base Quantico, covering over a hundred miles, is the largest base the Marine Corps has. It is known as the “Crossroads of the Marine Corps.” The Marine Corps Officers Candidate School, Research Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy are at Quantico. It is also the principal training facility for the Drug Enforcement Administration. The area was settled in the 16th century by the Algonquin Native American tribe. The name Quantico comes from Native American for “land by the large stream.” In the 17th century tobacco was king here as the area was a bustling stopping point on tobacco roads between New York and Florida.
