The city of Richmond is steeped in history: its State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1788, and in the rotunda is Jean Antoine Houdon's statue of George Washington. The Museum of the Confederacy and White House of the Confederacy is devoted to Confederate artifacts; the Richmond History Center/Valentine Museum holds an impressive collection of textiles, along with an 1812 Federal-style home decorated with neoclassical murals. Allow a day to visit the Richmond National Battlefield Park, eighty miles covering ten Civil War battle sites. Fredericksburg was settled in 1788, and its location at the head of the Rappahannock River made it a prosperous trading port. For this reason the city was important to both armies during the Civil War. Today, 350 buildings make up its National Historic District: Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop exhibits medicinal cures of the 18th century, you can raise a glass at the Rising Sun Tavern, built in 1760, or admire the displays of Louis XVI furniture at the James Monroe Museum. Virginia's coastal plain is made up of four rivers: the Potomac, Rappahannock, James and York forming fingers of land, "necks" that are estuaries for thousands of migratory birds. The Bay Shore Northern Neck on the shores of the Rappahannock consists of three historic towns: Kinsale, settled in 1708, Irvington, settled in 1735 and Reedville, settled in 1874.
