Overview

Located halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, this small city of 15,000 serves as the primary gateway to the San Juan Islands. Ferry service is several times daily to the islands from the Anacortes ferry terminal. Close to the ferry dock lies Washington Park with 200 acres of forest, hiking trails, campsites, and scenic shoreline. A few miles to the south is towering Deception Pass Bridge that links Fidalgo with Whidbey Island within beautiful Deception Pass State Park. Immediately north of Anacortes sits Guemes Island, where a small ferry runs hourly all day. In-town highlights include the Anacortes Museum and the historic W.T. Preston, a historic sternwheeler used to clear logs from nearby rivers. Anacortes has a number of fine restaurants and lodging places, and downtown buildings are decorated with colorful murals. Popular recreational options include the scenic drive up 1,270-foot Mount Erie, whale-watching, sea kayaking, sailing charters, and scuba diving.
