If you are a biking enthusiast you will love Eau Claire. There are no fewer than six trails that leave either from downtown Eau Claire or the surrounding area. And, several of the trails can be used for cross country skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, rollerblading or walking. The trails vary in length averaging from fourteen to thirty miles, offering spectacular views over and along rivers, farmlands and forests. Opportunities for observing nature abound. The trails vary in length averaging from fourteen to thirty miles, offering spectacular views over and along rivers, farmlands and forests. Opportunities for observing nature abound. The largest nature reserve is the 3,060-acre Chippewa Moraine Ice Age State Recreation Area filled with kettle lakes and glacial mounds. A great family activity is the nature center and butterfly house at Beaver Creek Reserve. Or, take the kids to the Phillips Planetarium where they can learn about the constellations and the planets. There are several interesting museums with exhibits offering a taste of Eau Claire history. The Chippewa Valley Museum shows the life of the Ojibwe Native Americans and what farming was like through the years; there is also a one room schoolhouse that was operational from 1882 to 1961. The Empire in Pine Museum explores the logging history. The Schlegelmilch House, a late 19th century brick style structure is filled with period furnishings that belonged to the Schlegelmilch family.
