Despite American independence, Green Bay remained a British stronghold until after the War of 1812. It wasn't until 1816 that the United States finally gained dominance. Norwegian Otto Tank came to Green Bay in 1850 as a Moravian missionary to about 50 farming families. Tank bought 800 acres of land along the west bank of the Fox River for members of his religious community. The state's oldest frame structure — the Roi-Porlier-Tank Cottage — is now preserved at Heritage Hill State Park. The smallest city in the United States to host a professional sports team, Green Bay is famously proud of its Green Bay Packers. In the 1920s, the city's meat packing industry provided the nickname for a company sponsored sandlot football team. The Green Bay Packers soon became one of two charter teams of the National Football League. The Packers have gone on to win more championships than any other team in NFL history. No wonder that Lambeau Field is hallowed ground to Packers fans.
