Overview

Like many Midwestern cities on the Mississippi River, La Crosse was founded in the late 17th century by French fur traders. Like many Midwestern cities on the Mississippi River, La Crosse was founded in the late 17th century by French fur traders. It was not until 1841 that a New Yorker, Nathan Myrick, seeking his fortune in the West, set up a trading post here on the shores of the Mississippi. By 1856, when it was incorporated as a city, La Crosse was a major business port full of sawmills and breweries primarily because of its location along three rivers. Today, as home to three universities — the University of Wisconsin, Western Technical College, and Roman Catholic Viterbo University — the city has morphed into a major technology and medical hub. Where there are colleges there’s culture. Each of the universities have fine museums and performances in dance and theater. For biking try Great River State Trail, 24 miles of crushed limestone over old railroad tracks. The Hixon Forest Nature Center has a network of trails for walking and cross country skiing. With three rivers there is a cornucopia of water activities to choose from: kayaking, canoeing, or cruising the Mississippi in a steam powered paddle boat. For anglers the rivers are teeming with walleye, perch, northern pike, panfish and sturgeon.
